Beginner Sewing Project Hair Scrunchie Tutorial – easy ‘make in an hour’ project

These pretty hair scrunchies make an excellent little project for beginner and more experienced sewists alike.  They are brilliant for using up fabric scraps and you can even make them to co-ordinate with your handmade clothes! In my instructions Iā€™ll be sewing on my sewing machine but you could also sew all of this pattern by hand if you donā€™t have a machine available.  They make a great starter sewing project for children who want to learn to sew too. Step 1 ā€“ cut your fabric Choose the fabric you would like to use for your hair scrunchie.  If you donā€™t have any fabric available or canā€™t get to a…

DIBY Club Emmeline Gathered Dress Pattern Review

It was so lovely of the DIBY Club to get in touch with me and ask if I would like to sample and review one of their patterns.  Iā€™d not heard of the brand before but a quick look over their website and I knew they would be right up my street. The DIBY (Do It Better Yourself) Club aims to teach you to make your clothes better than you can buy them with a focus on getting the perfect fit for your individual body size and shape. THE PATTERN I was asked to review the Emmeline Dress, a fit and flare jersey dress with a variety of sleeve and…

The Avid Seamstress – The Blouse. A Tutorial in Collaboration with The Fabric Guys

This pattern has got to be one of my favourite patterns ever and it was a pleasure to make this one in this beautiful floral rayon from The Fabric Guys! I have always wanted a handmade blouse in my wardrobe but been put off by the collar stands and difficult cuffs that come with the making. In my opinion this pattern is the perfect introduction to shirt making, the instructions are clear and easy to follow and there are lots of little hints and tips along the way to help you out. I’ve made two versions now – for my first I loved the pattern image so much I used…

Minerva Blogger Network – New Look Kids 6205

This Bunnies on Bikes cotton fabric was too cute to pass up for my animal loving little girl so I snapped some up to make the New Look 6205 pattern for her which I’d had in my pattern stash for ages and not made up. Pattern: New Look 6205 – I made age 6 Fabric: Printed cotton fabric kindly gifted in return for a blog post, available to purchase here. Alterations: None at all other than that I made an age 6 for my 7 year old due to the amount of ease there was in the final garment. This fitted perfectly. Time to make: Approx 2-3 hours. I would…

Minerva Blogger Network – Christine Haynes Emery Dress

I absolutely loved my first version of this dress, I love the vintage style and the fact that it’s so wearable, and I knew as soon as I saw this beautiful white broderie anglaise that it would make a beautiful summery Emery. Pattern: Christine Haynes – Emery Dress Fabric: White Cotton Broderie Anglaise from Minerva Crafts kindly gifted in return for this blog post. Can be purchased here. Changes made: I left out the pockets on this version (I know!!!) but I didn’t want to interfere with the line of the dress since I’d lined it. Time to make: 3-4 hours I would definitely make this dress again – I…

Sew Over It Ultimate Shift Dress Review

Pattern: Sew Over It ā€“ Ultimate Shift Dress  Fabric: Lightweight Rayon Challis – Bold Flowers & Stripes from 1st for Fabric I ordered 2.5 metres of this beautiful lightweight rayon challis from 1st for Fabrics because I absolutely love both stripes and florals at the moment and this fabric combined the two perfectly.  The fabric arrived beautifully wrapped with a note from Julie which added a lovely personal touch. At the time of ordering I wasnā€™t exactly sure what I was going to make from the fabric but I knew I wanted to make a dress from it and that 2.5 metres should easily cover that. I deliberated for a…

    True Bias Ogden Cami ā€“ A Reviewā€¦.

If youā€™re a sewer youā€™ll know that there have been dozens and dozens of these tops all over sewing social media in all the beautiful fabrics so after lusting over about 600 of them on Instagram I decided it was time I gave this pattern a try.  I downloaded the PDF file direct from the True Bias website for $10.00, it winged itā€™s way into my Inbox and I printed it straight out.  Given that there are only five pattern pieces in total to print, this pattern was very quick to put together using the cut and stick method and very quick to cut from the fabric too as the…
