My thoughts on slow fashion and trying to shop more sustainably…

I LOVE clothes and I love fashion. You probably wouldn’t know this if you saw me on the school run these days. but I do.  In my younger, more carefree days I would spend a large proportion of my wages on clothes every month often only wearing something once, it was almost like a hobby, clothes were my interest and I wanted something new pretty much every weekend.  I’m almost ashamed to admit that now but maybe there wasn’t actually anything wrong with that at the time, it’s where I get my love of sewing from after all.  I also liked to study the clothes and see how they were…

Minerva Blogger Network – Sew Over It Pussy Bow Blouse

I have wanted to make this blouse for ages and ages but I was put off because I thought the cuffs looked a bit difficult. I chose this fabric not realising quite how sheer it was in real life but when it arrived it was so silky and beautiful I knew it couldn’t be anything else so I jumped right in and decided to tackle those cuffs with possibly the most difficult fabric I’ve ever worked with. No point in doing things by half hey… 😉 Pattern: Sew Over It Pussy Bow Blouse I bought the pdf version and printed at home. Fabric: Lady McElroy Spray Bouquet Chiffon, kindly gifted…

Minerva Blogger Network – New Look Kids 6205

This Bunnies on Bikes cotton fabric was too cute to pass up for my animal loving little girl so I snapped some up to make the New Look 6205 pattern for her which I’d had in my pattern stash for ages and not made up. Pattern: New Look 6205 – I made age 6 Fabric: Printed cotton fabric kindly gifted in return for a blog post, available to purchase here. Alterations: None at all other than that I made an age 6 for my 7 year old due to the amount of ease there was in the final garment. This fitted perfectly. Time to make: Approx 2-3 hours. I would…

Minerva Blogger Network – Christine Haynes Emery Dress

I absolutely loved my first version of this dress, I love the vintage style and the fact that it’s so wearable, and I knew as soon as I saw this beautiful white broderie anglaise that it would make a beautiful summery Emery. Pattern: Christine Haynes – Emery Dress Fabric: White Cotton Broderie Anglaise from Minerva Crafts kindly gifted in return for this blog post. Can be purchased here. Changes made: I left out the pockets on this version (I know!!!) but I didn’t want to interfere with the line of the dress since I’d lined it. Time to make: 3-4 hours I would definitely make this dress again – I…

The Perfect Beginner Jersey Dress – Coco by Tilly & The Buttons

I ordered 2.5 metres of this beautiful textured jersey from 1st for Fabrics because I have a mild obsession with stripes and also because I thought it would be perfect for the Coco pattern.  As always, the fabric arrived beautifully wrapped in pattern paper, with a handwritten note and a spool of cotton, from Julie which added a lovely personal touch. I’d not made the Coco pattern before but I had heard lots of good things about it, I love simple jersey dresses in the autumn and winter for wearing with tights and boots so I knew that this pattern would be a very useful addition to my wardrobe. As always,…

Sew Over It Ultimate Shift Dress Review

Pattern: Sew Over It – Ultimate Shift Dress  Fabric: Lightweight Rayon Challis – Bold Flowers & Stripes from 1st for Fabric I ordered 2.5 metres of this beautiful lightweight rayon challis from 1st for Fabrics because I absolutely love both stripes and florals at the moment and this fabric combined the two perfectly.  The fabric arrived beautifully wrapped with a note from Julie which added a lovely personal touch. At the time of ordering I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to make from the fabric but I knew I wanted to make a dress from it and that 2.5 metres should easily cover that. I deliberated for a…

    My dressmaking story…

As well as making beautiful handmade things for my lovely customer’s homes as part of my business, in my spare time I also love to sew clothes for myself and my children. I have always wanted to make my own clothes. When I was a child of around ten I learned to knit and I would spend lots of my time knitting soft toys and gifts and then eventually, as I got older and more experienced, progressing to jumpers and cardigans which I could wear myself.  As I got older I became more interested in sewing, my Mum, Nan and Grandma all knew how to sew so I had lots of…
